XOXO FM is the newest album of Mexico City born, Texas raised, Berlin BASED hottie superstar Miss Bashful, faithfully accompanied by DBBD on the beats. It provides the slut pop I was looking for in Kim Petras but didn't find until now. In all, it's 23 minutes of maximalist minimalism, you know what I mean? Just DBBD's honest beats and Miss Bashful's catchy truths, the two each doing what they do best! How it glitters! It scratches an itch I have for sure.
Miss Bashful feels like a Charli XCX, before clubs started marketing brat night as a way to charge $20 when usually it's $5. I love Charli XCX. I love how she's a party girl, sometimes she's sad, sometimes she makes mistakes. Miss Bashful is tangential to this vibe (one that, in the era of brat summer, seems to have recently taken off as a trending archetype of femininity!), but less Internet and more boys. The bikinis are similar. "I'm Sexy and I Know It" from women in 2024.
Awkward moment when I was listening to this album on the way to school, hook up my computer to show my advisory of 14 year olds some slides first thing in the morning and they lose it at the sight of this:
Like come on, it's fine. My fave song on the record? Maybe "Copycat." Though I feel like the album is one long song experience. Shoutout Miss Bashful for coining the phrase Muschi Muschi.
I have lots of thoughts on Miss Bashful, Charli XCX, the gay culture surrounding, the womanhood of it all... It's fascinating and enticing. Will report back soon.
